„SHUT UP! NO BACK TALK!“
A lot of meetings end up in conflicts and bad outcomes:
Bad decisions being made because no one speaks up to the boss.
People being blamed (or even fired) for speaking out the truth „too“ offensive.
So what’s the conclusion?
BUSINESS PEOPLE KNOW BEST
You’re sitting in a meeting and your MASTER-CHIEF (boss) tells something about his new „strategy“ for your company, which is – from an objective view – quite shitty.
You really would like to speak up and tell your opinion, but your inner voice tells you…
The 2 extreme options for you would be
A) „Keepin it real“
and say exactly what you’re thinking (=> Rude => conflict for you).
B) Be a Yes-Sayer
or say nothing at all ( => Chicken-hearted => conflict for the company => no respect for you)
HOW TO SAY THE TRUTH (RESPECTFULLY)
Follow these 3 tactics to earn some respect and :
// 1. UNDERSTAND YOUR BOSS
Try to think about his goals and start like:
„I understand that you want to reach this/or that goal by doing this“
It is important that your boss doesn’t lose his face, when you speak out your opinion.
So even though you’re not agreeing with him: neither be to aggressive nor too soft with your tone.
In both cases your opinion won’t be respected and your MasterChief starts to defend or attack you.
// 2. BE A TIGER
Imagine yourself being a tiger. A tiger has no fear of facing a confrontation, so: Be brave!
Write down some bulletpoints on what you think, before you speak up.
(Please don’t roar at your boss)
// 3. BREATH SLOWLY & SPEAK CALMLY
Don’t rush: Take your time to speak with a soft & empathic tone.
This one will give you more security & help you to overcome the natural „stress-symptons“
(dry lung, wet hands, shaky voice)
